About CMT

2022 marked the 90th anniversary of Congleton Musical Theatre, and incredible achievement!

The society was formed in 1932, though some documentation has come to light which suggests a musical society existed in some form from 1929, and was known as the Congleton British Legion  (Amateur Operatic Society). Following a name change, the Society became Congleton Amateur Operatic Society (CAOS) which it remained until 2009.

In 2009, we set about modernising and updating the society to face the challenges of modern day amateur musical theatre.  Our new name, Congleton Musical Theatre, better describes our current and future objectives and reflects the shows that are available to perform and that appeal to the audiences of today. But to get a flavour of the very wide variety of types of musicals CMT has staged take a look at our Previous Shows page or the Gallery page of pictures from past shows.

Over the years members of the cast Congleton Musical Theatre have been nominated for many prestigious NODA  (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) nominations in a number of fields of amateur theatre - testimony to the very high standards to which CMT aspire.

We perform once per year, starting rehearsals in May and staging the show in October of that year. Our main company rehearsal nights are Monday and Thursday evenings.  Additional rehearsals on other days may be added, if required, at other times during the season.

We generally accept people who are over 16 years of age and who successfully pass a singing audition.

Occasionally our shows do feature children under 16.  Many of our shows have included a cast of children who are always sympathetically auditioned (separately to the adults).  Indeed, our recent show King and I featured a number of children. Also – we are always happy to meet trained dancers who can sing!

If you are interested in joining us in Legally Blond or any other of our performances, or maybe just work backstage in of of the very many areas which contribute to the staging of a show and would like to discuss this with us please go to the Contact Us page.  If you'd prefer, you can also speak to one of our members – they can explain more about the auditioning process.  It's really not as scary as it sounds!

So, help us to celebrate our 91st    year of performing the very best in amateur musical shows and performances.

Join us and be part   of  a vibrant part of Congleton's   cultural heritage!

Rehearsals are held on Monday and Thursday at 7.30 pm. at Daneside Theatre.

If you would like to join us, come along or use our contact page.

You are assured of a warm welcome.
